On the market today we have several erectile dysfunction treatments. They belong to the same family of medication called PDE5 inhibitors. Just as their name says they are inhibiting phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) enzyme, whose main task is to restrict the blood vessels. Levitra (Vardenafil) is one of the most recently approved PDE5 inhibitor by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

To understand the workings of the Levitra (Vardenafil) we have to understand the physiology of erection. The entire process encompasses the brain, spinal column, the area around the penis, and response in muscles, fibrous tissues, veins, and arteries in and near the corpora cavernosa. The entire process starts with sexual stimulation, excitation. Brain then issues signals through the spinal column to the area around the penis. Nitric oxide (NO) is then released inside the penis which activates enzyme called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This enzyme expands the arteries, blood vessels that lead blood into the penis, and at the same time it constricts veins, blood vessels that drain the blood into the body. This process of expansion and constriction of the blood vessels leads to filling of the penis with blood and the engorgement of the penis we call erection. After successful completion of the sexual intercourse PDE5 enzyme is released into the penis to neutralize the effect of the cGMP and blood flow is returns to normal. As a result of the normal blood flow, penis returns to its usual flaccid state. If any of these processes is disrupted, erectile problems arise.
When a man takes Levitra its active ingredient Vardenafil inhibits the PDE5 enzyme and the action of cGMP enzyme is prolonged. In most men desired effect is achieved by taking 10 mg dose of Levitra (Vardenafil) per day, one hour prior to sexual intercourse. In cases where the usual dosage of 10 mg is producing undesirable effects like prolonged erection or erection not being achieved at all, physician can prescribe one of the other dosages available. Levitra (Vardenafil) additionally comes in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 20 mg dosages. Dosage must be prescribed by the certified physicians and cannot be changed without his knowledge. Overdosing can lead to prolonged erections which could lead to serious medical problems. Before taking Levitra (Vardenafil) you should not eat any high hat meals, because fat can slow down the absorption rate of the medication. Also avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while you are being treated with this medication unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
During testing phases of PDE5 inhibitors certain side effects were associated with their use. In most cases they are mild and pass over time but can include: headache, flushing, nasal stuffiness, stomach upset, heartburn, runny nose, dizziness, or nausea. In some cases patients using PDE5 inhibitors have complained of temporary, partial or complete loss of vision but there is no scientific evidence that it can be associated with Levitra (Vardenafil). Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages prior and after taking the drug, because it can increase some of the side effects.
Before you decide to start treatment with Levitra (Vardenafil) consult your physician about the possible side effects. Inform your doctor of any other medication (prescribed or over the counter) and supplements you are currently using so contraindications can be avoided.
