Many men in America today suffer from erectile dysfunction, fortunately there are many miracle drugs on the market designed to treat erectile dysfunction including vardenafil. Vardenafil was developed by Bayer and is sold under the trade name Levitra.
Cause of Vardenafil action
Vardenafil is similar to the other erectile dysfunction medications including sildenafil and tadalafil. The difference is a methyl group and a nitrogen atom’s position.
Vardenafil works by blocking the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5), blocking this enzyme helps maintain levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP), a chemical produced in the penis during arousal. Having balanced levels of GMP causes the smooth muscles of the penis to relax and increases blood flow.
Vardenafil or Levitra has shown in extensive clinical studies that it improves erectile dysfunction in up to 85% of men with the condition. It also has shown to work well in men with diabetes and ones who have had radical prostatectomy.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction or impotence only occurs in men and is a sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance.
An erection occurs when blood enters the penis and triggers a hydraulic effect; blood enters and is retained in sponge like bodies inside the penis. This process is initiated during intercourse when sexual arousal is transmitted from the brain to the nerves in the pelvis.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
There are many different causes of erectile dysfunction, some of which are treatable medical conditions. Some of the causes are cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurological problems such as trauma from prostatectomy surgery, hormonal insufficiencies and drug side effects.
Erectile dysfunction can also be a sign of underlying risk for cardiovascular disease.
Sometimes erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological or relation problems. Psychological impotence is where the erection or penetration fails due to thought or feelings rather than a physical inability; this is treatable.
Most men do not like to discuss this due to their masculinity put it has been shown that one in ten men will experience recurring impotence problems as some point in their lives.
Besides treating psychological problems that lead to erectile dysfunction, there are many treatments for this disorder. The first treatment tried is the use of a PDE5 inhibitor drugs like vardenafil, is some cases treatment can involve prostaglandin tablets in the urethra. To get the medication in the penis, intracavernous injection with a needle will be administered. Other treatments include penile prosthesis which is a penis pump or vascular reconstructive surgery.
How can Vardenafil help?
Vardenafil can help by releasing nitric oxide into the blood flow which causes the smooth muscles in the penis to relax. Blood flow then increases causing an erection. Vardenafil should be taken one to two hours before sexual intercourse and usually lasts for three to four hours.
If an erection lasts for four hours or more it is considered a medical emergency and should be treated immediately. If it is not treated, priapism can lead to permanent loss of function in the penis and sometimes even gangrene which then leads to penile amputation.
Vardenafil is a very helpful drug for men experiencing erectile dysfunction, it is prescribed by a doctor after reviewing the patient’s medical history and making sure it will be safe for the patient to take.
