more info…
Vardenafil or Levitra, is a popular drug used by many men today experiencing erectile dysfunction. Like any other type of medication, vardenafil has side effects and risk factors. Always discuss your medical history and medications taken with your doctor before starting this drug.
Vardenafil Side Effects
The most common side effects of vardenafil are flushing, gastrointestinal distress, headache, nasal congestion, back pain, and dizziness. These side effects usually are mild and should be reported to your doctor if they become persistent or bothersome.
Effects vardenafil has on the heart
When vardenafil was first released, there were some reports of fatal heart attacks in a small percentage of men taking the drug. Vardenafil causes the blood pressure to lower and can be sudden and possibly dangerous when taken with other nitrate drugs including nitroglycerine. Some of these effects have been fatal. Although vardenafil studies reported an improvement of blood flow to the heart, another study reported that the drug may excite the nerves associated with heart function. Recent studies have not found a higher risk from PDE5 inhibitors causing adverse effects on the heart in men with heart disease not taking nitrates. Vardenafil may even be safe for men with congestive heart failure that are healthy enough for sexual activity.
Men taking nitrates for heart problems such as angina should not take vardenafil or any other type of PDE5 inhibitor.
Vardenafil and Vision effects
Only about two and a half percent of men taking vardenafil have reported experiencing abnormal visual effects including seeing a blue haze, temporary increased brightness, and in a few cases temporary vision loss.
Some experts believe that vision problems are related to the inhibition of phosphodiesterase enzymes in the retina, but it seems to be temporary and insignificant, lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.
Men taking vardenafil and that are at risk for eye problems should regularly have eye examinations with an eye doctor. If vision problems last more than a few hours you should see an ophthalmologist.
The FDA began investigating reports of partial vision loss in men who took vardenafil and other ED drugs including tadalafil and sildenafil, in 2005. The concluded that the vision loss was caused by non arteric anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or NAION, it is a condition that happens from poor blood flow to the optic nerves. However, experts found that erectile dysfunction is linked to the same vascular problems that cause NAION. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are at a higher risk for erectile dysfunction and other vascular problems including NAION.
Always tell your doctor of any side effects you experience while taking vardenafil especially the more serious ones including vision loss, heart problems, seizures, and priapism.
Vardenafil and Priapism
With any PDE5 inhibitor there is a relatively low risk of priapism. Priapism is when an erection is sustained for four hours or more, they are often unwanted and painful. If left untreated, risks include permanent loss of function and gangrene which leads to penile amputation.
Always discuss the risks and side effects of a drug before taking it. Vardenafil has some side effect which include vision problems, priapism and even some heart problems.
